Eyes are one of the first signs of aging, as the skin around the eyes is significantly thinner than the rest of the skin on our face. Taking care of your beautiful eyes should never be overlooked and you should start using eye care product as early as your 20s. More often than not, we always overuse our eyes. We spend more than 8 hours in front of computer and handphone before going to sleep. Moreover, exposure to UV rays, radiation, blue light, contact lens, air pollution tends to cause many skin issues around eye areas such as dark circles, dryness, puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. Here are the Top 10 Eye Care Tips and common challenges:
1. Puffy Eyes / Eye Bags
The appearance of puffiness can be due to the swelling of tissues around the eyes caused by fluid retention, loose skin and falling fat. Avoid overconsumption of salt. As we age, collagen breakdown of the layer of tissue that holds the fat in the eye area weakens and causes drooping and sagging. Avoid rubbing the delicate eye area, and sleep on your back, elevating your head slightly to prevent fluid from accumulating while you sleep. Apply antiaging eye creams day and night with appropriate eye massage to promote better blood circulation around the eyes.
2. Under Eye Dark Circles
Under eye dark circles are one of our most frustrating skin concerns. It tends to become more pronounced as we age. This results in visible blood vessels or excessive melanin production in the affected area. Regardless of your dark circles are hereditary or a result of your lifestyle or environment, the eye care tips below can help reduce them:
- Good quality eye mask helps to inhibit melanin production, promotes circulation, replenishes collagen and eliminates dark circle.
- Sleeping on your back is probably the most effective method of reducing dark circles. Keeping the head slightly elevated reduces swelling of tissues and veins.
- Black tea contains tannic acid and caffeine, which constrict vessels to minimize dark under eye veins. Tea bags may stain light or very dry skin, so moisturize before applying cold tea bags to eyes.
- Exercise will increase circulation and pump oxygen into the vessels, which will increase blood flow. This is important as often dark circles are caused by veins not getting enough oxygen.
- Vitamin C, particularly Iron supplement, can be effective as iron deficiencies will often cause dark circles.
- Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins in your body that can cause dark circles.
- Use mild waterproof eye makeup remover to remove eye makeup thoroughly at the end of the day.
3. Fine Lines
As we get older, cell turnover slows and dead skin cells build up around the eyes. Lack of moisture can increase the appearance of fine lines around your eyes. The collagen breaks down reducing the elasticity in the skin and causing lines. Fine lines can be minimised by using eye creams and eye masks that promote cell turnover and help rebuild collagen.
4. Milia Oil Seeds
Milia are dead skin cells that caught in pores and trapped by a layer of skin, creating white bumps that are often found on lids and under eyes. They are usually caused by heredity, sun exposure and heavy creams. Use eye gels and eye masks that contain gentle exfoliating acids, retinols and/or vitamin C. Use eye creams and serums that are lighter in texture and avoid thicker creams not specifically formulated for the eye area.
5. Hooded Eye Lids
As we age, collagen breaks down in the already thin skin and causes it to sag, therefore creating a hooded effect or the lid folding onto the lash line. Start using eye creams early to combat these effects. Wearing foundation on the eyelids will provide some level of protection, use waterproof eyeliners and mascaras to minimise panda eyes.
6. Veins
Tired eyes with visible veins in the eyes can be result of irritation from cosmetics, environmental factors i.e smog or allergens; lack of sleep, dry eyes, contact lens, etc. Use mild eye makeup remover to remove eye makeup thoroughly; use eye drops to clear and flush out eyes. Apply foundation or concealer on eyelids to hide any visible capillaries. Avoid pink or purple eye shadows.
7. Sun Damage
Exposure to UV rays can cause premature aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, milia, under eye dark circles. The sun is a big contributor to most eye area problems. Wear sunglasses and hat to protect your face and eyes from harmful UVA and UVB. Makeup will also add a physical barrier so make sure to add foundation as well as eye shadows to eyelids for added protection.
8. Oily Eyelids
It can be difficult to wear eye makeup, as the oiliness causes cosmetics to smudge or crease. Waterproof mascaras and eyeliners will minimize any smudging. Apply a thin layer of loose powder on the eyelids before applying eye shadow to absorb excess oil. Stick concealers work better for oily eyelids and it tends to take longer to melt so apply a small amount of concealer instead of foundation to eyelids before makeup. Eye makeup primer is also very useful in keeping eye shadows and eye liners from smudging.
9. Sensitive Eyes
Our eyes can become increasingly more sensitive as we get older. Maintain proper hygiene. Ensure to remove your eye makeup proper every night and here are a few useful tips for sensitive eye care:
- Use eye drops to keep eyes hydrated
- Discard mascaras after 5-6 months
- Avoid hard and waxy eyeliners
- Invest in good quality eyeshadow
- If your eyes tend to tear, use waterproof gel eyeliners and mascaras
- Remove makeup thoroughly with mild waterproof eye makeup remover
- Avoid glitter and flaky mascaras, which can fall into eyes and irritate them further.
- Wear glasses instead of contact lens
10. Poor Circulation
Ge gentle to your eyes. Avoid rubbing your eyes when you are tired. Massage your eyes gently while applying eye cream to improve circulation in the eye area. Using your middle or ring fingers, gently apply pressure to the pressure point around your eye areas. See below.
